Studded Belts Go Mainstream
People have been wearing belts for a long time, since the Bronze Age as far as we know. In the old days belts were generally associated with male clothing. It remained somewhat like that until the middle ages but it wasn't really until the 20th century when belts became a common accessory for women also. But even for men belts were only worn as part of a uniform.
In its early days belts were made from either leather or cloth and the primary purpose was to hold up ones clothing. Later on belt became a part of fashion and also to make a certain rebellious statement. Generally for women, it was to follow a specific fashion trend but if your into "gothic" or punk" trend then a belt can mean something more than just fashion.
As mentioned before belts original intention was to be part of military uniform. It was not unusual for military personnel to wear belts extra tight so as to give the fit and trim appearance that is associated with the military. When the 1920's hit, there were some changes in men's pants designs. The waistline was lowered and the pants were made to be more lose fitting, this is when the use of belts became wide spread.
The trend in the waistline of pants was the beginning of wide spread use of the belt and that trend slowly made its way to women's clothes, by the 1950' women started to wear pants regularly and then it was only a matter of time that belts became a fashion accessory. But that is not the only use for belts; they can also be used for utility purposes like the ones worn by cops and construction personnel.
Today there are a huge variety of belts available and belts have become something that people notice especially if it is worn with a specific reason in mind. During the 1980's such trends as the "gothic' and "punk" came into fashion. For such folks wearing what is known as a studded belt is the norm. It is a belt that is generally a little bit wider and will have metal studs to make it look coarser.
